Wamingo's first book "Pride of the Scouts" is now available in both paperback and ebook format. It is the first of a six-part series chronicling the adventures of various individuals on the planet of Sidoria. Each book is told from the point of view of a character and is (more or less) self-contained. However, characters and events will trickle over from one story to the next to form a larger narrative.
The premise of Pride of the Scouts has to do with a technologically advanced race known as the Lykainians who built a great wall around their kingdom, Elysium, to safeguard their people against outside threats. The most prominent of these threats is the Saymoorians, a barbarian race that holds a long-standing grudge against the Lykainians. Their general, Malkan, has vowed to tear down Elysium's walls and put every man, woman, and child to the sword.
Elysium's Emperor, realizing that the great walls can hold only so many of his people, decides to expand his Empire farther into the surrounding lands before overcrowding leads to disease, starvation, and death. To this end, he forms the cavalry scouts, an elite squad of soldiers whose primary task is to patrol the outlying region, which they call the Deadlands due to its harsh living conditions. When they come upon land deemed inhabitable, they conquer it in the name of the Empire.
Naturally enough, this makes the scouts unpopular with the Saymoorians and every other Deadlander looking to protect their territory. By the beginning of the novel, tensions between the races have reached a critical point. At a place deep within enemy territory called the Dagger Hills, the scouts find themselves besieged by a Saymoorian army led by General Malkan himself.
The cavalry scouts, badly outnumbered, call a hasty retreat. However, twelve of their number are left behind on the battlefield. These twelve men are the focus of the first book. We follow them as they fight through hostile lands in order to stop General Malkan before his plans can reach fruition. Not all of them will make it back alive, but each will stand their ground in the face of overwhelming odds.
The Sidoria Saga is heavily inspired by those old pulp yarns spun by the likes of Robert E. Howard, H. P. Lovecraft, and Clark Ashton Smith, and appeared in magazines such as Wierd Tales and Amazing Stories back in the '20's and '30's. These tales were often crudely written, extremely bloody, unabashedly sexist, politically incorrect works of fiction, but they had a manic energy to them that kept the reader's eyes glued to the page.
For obvious reasons, you will find the sexism and PC issues toned down here (the writing will also be of a higher caliber, one hopes). What we will maintain is that manic energy, that sense of high-rolling adventure that made the old pulp yarns stand out on the shelves. And speaking of standing out, artist Dar Parsons' lavishly detailed cover art is worth the price of the book alone. He also supplies the art chores on the inside pages, complimenting Jeremy Lee Riley's break-neck writing style.
